Mississauga's 50th Anniversary Mural

The City's public art program commissions professional artists to create visual art for public spaces.

To celebrate Mississauga's 50th anniversary, the public art program is commissioning a new large-scale mural on the concert tower of the Living Arts Centre. The mural will thank and acknowledge the Anishinaabe peoples who came to be known as the Mississaugas of the Credit for our city's name. It will also honour 50+ years of Mississauga's history and celebrate our city's exciting future.

  • Meet the Artists

Que Rock, Alex Bacon, and Peru are internationally-recognized muralists with over 20 years of experience.

"As a collaborative team of Indigenous and immigrant creators, we are deeply honoured and excited to propose a mural that celebrates the Living Arts Centre, the City of Mississauga’s 50th anniversary and generations of Indigenous leadership and contributions from diverse peoples and species who have made Mississauga the thriving hub it is today."

Que Rock is a proud Nipissing First Nation born, multi-disciplinary artist. He started life learning his Anishinaabe and Odawa cultures through ceremony. He is part of the Three Fires Confederacy and the Robinson Huron Treaty and he personally feels a deep connection to the land, the area of turtle island, and all the nations that share the space with the human nation.

Canadian graffiti artist Alex Bacon began painting in the 90s as a teenager. His work has evolved to deconstructing traditional graffiti spray paint techniques to create an abstract graffiti style while maintaining letter form. His use of a mature colour pallet and mixing of realism with the stylized graffiti fonts gives his work a unique look with smooth transitions and texture. When his neices were born at Trillium Hospital, Mississauga became his second home - a city where he regularly visits family and cherishes new memories.

PERU143 is an internationally recognized Peruvian-Canadian muralist and graphic artist whose practice is informed by digital and traditional art forms and his 25 years of painting graffiti. Peru’s work aims to heal, inspire and uplift people’s spirits by transforming spaces into safe, playful, and imaginative worlds. Like Alex, Mississauga became a second home to Peru when he married his wife 15 years ago. After immigrating from the Philippines, his wife's family found peace and a sense of community in Mississauga - something that Peru wants to thank Mississauga for, in this mural.

The artists were selected for this commission by an arms-length jury because their proposal demonstrated artistic excellence, innovation, feasibility, site-specificity, and a deep respect for and integration of the public's survey feedback. Stay tuned for more updates about the mural's design!

  • Community Feedback Survey

Three artists/artist team were shortlisted to develop proposals for a mural that celebrates and honours the history of Mississauga and its name.

Mississauga residents had the opportunity to contribute to each artist's proposal development. In a series of videos, the artists introduced themselves and their artistic practice and asked residents question(s) of their choice.

An arms-length art selection committee selected an artist team for the commission based on their design's artistic merit and response to the community's feedback.

    Submissions that were under consideration:

    Born in the North

Que Rock, Alex Bacon, Peru and Santosh

    Blake Angeconeb
