Climate change

We’re preparing for climate change in Mississauga. We’ve already felt the effects with an increase in extreme weather events like seasonal flooding, extreme rainfall, ice storms, and some of the hottest summers on record.

Climate change has damaged our homes, businesses, shorelines, roads and other infrastructure. It has cost us millions of dollars in cleanup and repairs, while impacting the lives of our residents.

We’re committed to decreasing our carbon footprint and preparing the community for the impacts of a changing climate.

What we're doing

Review our ongoing progress report for more information on how the City is preparing for climate change.

How to reduce your carbon footprint

Start by using Project Neutral’s carbon footprint calculator to understand your climate impact. Then consider making changes at your home, to your routine and participating in City-run events and programs.

  • Turn down your thermostat by 1 degree in the winter.
  • Install a Smart Thermostat.
  • Reuse, repurpose or donate items you don’t need.
  • Choose to walk or bike for at least one trip that’s under a kilometre distance instead of driving.
  • Reduce your red meat intake to once a week or month or entirely.
  • Grow your own vegetables.
  • Turn one of your vacation into a staycation.
  • Carpool to work.
  • Insulate your home to improve energy efficiency.
  • Install an air source or ground source heat pump.
  • Replace internal combustion engine (ICE) with an electric vehicle.
  • Stop driving your car.
