Small Arms Inspection Building North End Revitalization

The Small Arms Inspection Building (SAIB) has been part of the Lakeview community since 1939. The City of Mississauga opened the south portion of the building in 2018 to serve as a community cultural hub. It offers 18,000 square feet of flexible, open concept space available for shared use during public hours and is available as a rental space. The south portion is ideal for events, exhibitions, workshops, performances, meetings, festivals, and more.

Now, the City of Mississauga is conducting a feasibility study that will set a vision and plan for the rehabilitation of the north side of the building comprised of 24,000 sq ft of space.

Project Update

Thank you to everyone who attended the Public Information Session on Wednesday July 14, 2021. We have added a summary from the session as well as included the questions that were asked that evening under the Documents section of this webpage. The space program that was presented on July 14, 2021 included 9 kinds of spaces that were most requested through community consultation. These were also identified as spaces that were needed most in the community both now and in the future. The next step will be to determine the feasibility of creating these spaces based on cost, structural suitability and design/building standards.

We’ve heard that there is a strong desire for SAIB to remain focused on arts, culture and heritage. It is also important to look at the future needs of the Lakeview community and surrounding area as it grows significantly in the next five to ten years. Decisions on use will be based on a variety of factors that include listening to the community, proactively planning for future growth and ensuring the vision and plan for the building is financially sustainable.

Your Opinion Matters

Due to COVID-19, the City has postponed in-person public engagement activities based on public health recommendations and the need for physical distancing. City staff will continue to engage with the public to confirm the findings of the feedback and ensure the building meets community needs.
