The City of Mississauga’s Changing Lanes Project will update, develop and implement new tools for staff, developers, and other street providers to ensure our streets are safe and more convenient for all users. The Changing Lanes project will:
Develop a new street classification system, to be included in Mississauga’s Official Plan
Deliver a Complete Streets Guide for streets in Mississauga, updating our approach to street planning and design
At-a-Glance: Complete Streets
Complete Streets guidelines and policies work to ensure that multiple types of street users can be accommodated and feel comfortable and safe sharing our streets. This includes pedestrians, cyclists, public transportation users and drivers. Measures can include installing cycling facilities, building sidewalks (where not already existing), adding dedicated public transit lanes, and implementing measures to slow down traffic.

Lifecycle
Phase One: Streets Assessment (March to June 2020)
Changing Lanes has finished this stage
The project team will examine the state of Mississauga’s streets today, investigating how our streets currently serve or hinder pedestrian, cyclist, transit user, and motorist safety and comfort.
Phase Two: Street Classification Study (July 2020 to February 2021)
Changing Lanes has finished this stage
A new street classification system will be developed for Mississauga. This classification will account for both the role of streets in moving people through our City and as places that support our villages, neighbourhoods, Downtown Mississauga, employment areas, and industries.
Phase Three: Complete Streets Guide (March 2021)
Changing Lanes is currently at this stage
The project team will develop a Guide that defines an assessment process to make our streets safe and comfortable for all users. This Guide will provide design considerations, parameters and provide example cross-sections to guide street design and operations.
Future work
this is an upcoming stage for Changing Lanes
Staff will review and update the City’s road engineering design standards to ensure they conform with the new Complete Streets Guide.
