Urban Design Program Review

We are updating our Urban Design Program to help create lively, well-designed communities. We also want to make it easier to build more homes and make housing more affordable.

Phase 1 of public engagement is now open

Watch our short video to learn what urban design is and how Mississauga is reviewing its Urban Design Program. Then take a quick survey to tell us what matters most to you.

A public open house will take place in fall 2026. Subscribe for email updates to stay informed.

About this project

The City of Mississauga is reviewing its Urban Design Program. This program includes the policies, guidelines and standards that shape how buildings, streets and public spaces look and feel across the city.

Mississauga is growing and changing. We need more housing and must respond to challenges such as affordability and climate change. At the same time, we want to keep high standards for design and quality of life.

The review will:

  • Look for ways to improve the program
  • Learn from ideas and practices used in other cities
  • Find ways to streamline the program to help speed up housing development

What is urban design?

Think about a building you like or how easy it is to walk in your neighbourhood. That’s urban design in action. It shapes how cities are built and how people experience them. Good urban design can help:

  • Make neighbourhoods easy and safe to walk in
  • Help make housing more attainable
  • Improve connections to transit
  • Create welcoming parks and public spaces
  • Use land, energy and resources wisely for today and for future generations
