FAQs
How does the Urban Design Program impact homeowners or other small landowners who want to develop their property?
In practice, the Urban Design Program is applied during the development review process, providing guidance on how buildings, streets and public spaces are designed and fit together. Developments of any size may be subject to urban design guidelines where they interface with the public realm, such as streets, parks or other public spaces, or where heritage considerations are involved. For more information, please review the City's current Urban Design Guidelines for more details.
Is the Mississauga Official Plan 2051 being updated as part of this review?
No. The City recently adopted the Mississauga Official Plan 2051, and it is not being updated as part of this project. The City will align the Urban Design Program with the Official Plan. If an amendment to the Mississauga Official Plan 2051 is needed, a separate process will be initiated.
How will this address the challenge of housing affordability?
The Urban Design Program Review will streamline the planning and development process, which will help build more housing faster and more cost effectively while continuing to enable good urban design. These changes aim to reduce the costs of building and increase the availability of housing, which can make housing more attainable for both homebuyers and renters.
